Hi all! I thought I would finally get around to showing you some props that my boyfriend and I make. This is for my LoZ: SS Skyloft Link costume, and soon to follow there will be the Practice Sword to go with it.
How it was made
To be truthful, I'm not going to go into crazy detail with this. c:
My bf (because I was a chicken and didn't want to mess up the roundness) cut out of foam the shape of the shield and gouged it to look like wood, and wrapped the edges with more foam. We sealed it, then he made a handle for it that I wrapped in leather and muslin fabric. I molded a strip of leather for the arm band, and literally screwed it in with 4 wood screws. Then came the arduous part- painting it to look like wood rather than foam. I laid a basecoat down for each plank of wood (if you look up references of the shield, each plank is colored differently) and then did a zillion and one washes to achieve the look of old, aged and used wood. I free handed the bird foot and dry-brushed it on- I wanted it to look used and worn, and handmade; not pristine and pretty. Shields are meant to be used, after all!! After that I painted the 'metal' rim, drybrushed it black and accentuated some damage to it, then pressed in real rivets where the bands met and drybrushed them too. The only thing not shown in these pictures are the metal bands 'holding' the planks together- I needed to put a satin clear coat over the whole deal and after that plum forgot to attach them before taking the pictures. Whoops! c:
What I would do differently?
Go buy a real handle from the hardware store. Which I did- this one is being replaced with a new metal one. c:
Would you make one for me?
As a commission, absolutely! I would be glad to make one for you! If you would like to know more about this, just send me a note OR contact me on my facebook page OR through my email- firstname.lastname@example.org .
Can I see more of your work and progress pictures?
Certainly! Just head over to my facebook page! www.facebook.com/pages/BlueLem…

LoZ:SS is (c) Nintendo, I just love it way too much to be healthy. c:
Im working on a small buckler made of wood and thats why I was asking. Damn awesome job!
Hey, good luck with that! It would be awesome to see what you come up with! You're really brave for making it out of wood. I've never actually handled that material yet!
You can find circular wooden pieces at Hobby Lobby (in my case), Michaels, etc. I was lucky to find one in the size I need cause bucklers are small shields.
I'll have to check next time I'm at one of those stores! Lol, yeah, I knew bucklers are small shields. They're actually pretty neat! I'd like to own one one day- I'm an actual swordfighter, I fence! c:
I want to try making this shield but I'm wondering, how would you have added those little metal things holding the planks together onto the shield?
I actually have added the metal things since this collage was made! They are the metal clips from the cheapo plastic pants hangers hammered flat and glued on. I'll try to put an updated picture on here soon!
Thank you! I appreciate it!!
To be honest, likely around $100, depending on shipping costs. These take around 7 hours to make, and the materials cost around $20 (depending if I can get them on sale or not). I work for slightly above minimum wage in my area ($0.25 more) so at 7 hours that's right at $52.50 for labor. I am guesstimating shipping to be $30, but in all possibility it is probably less. These shields don't weigh much at all! Maybe 8 pounds max? I feel like that is a really reasonable price. Plus these babies are durable as all get out. I dropped mine from two stories just for kicks and it didn't even scuff the paint! c: If you have anymore questions just let me know hon! Thanks for the inquiry!!
